A 13-foot Burmese python named Mango, aged three and a half years, was recently relocated to the Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo in Rome, New York. The snake's owner, Mike Stone, admitted that Mango had grown too large for him to handle.

Initially kept in a home near Syracuse, the python was confined to a five-foot enclosure, which was inadequate for its size. Weighing 80 pounds, Mango was still growing and could potentially reach up to 17 feet in length.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) became involved after receiving a complaint about the large snake, which was thought to be illegally kept as a pet.

Officer Jeff Hull identified Mango as a Burmese python based on the arrowhead design on its head. Upon inspection, Hull found the snake in an enclosure far too small for its needs, leading to its relocation.

Mango's owner expressed his relief and gratitude stating, "Thank you soo much for taking my bella in and giving her a great home to live her long life out!" He also mentioned that Mango is docile, loves affection, and will be missed by him and his children. The family plans to visit Mango regularly at the zoo.

Rebecca Stedman, co-owner of the Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo, shared her excitement about Mango joining their zoo family. She noted that Mango's docile nature makes her an excellent candidate for educational purposes, allowing children to get up close and learn about the species.

Stedman emphasized the importance of providing adequate space for such a large snake to prevent respiratory infections, adding that the zoo is working on enlarging Mango's habitat to suit her growing needs.

The NYSDEC issued citations to Mike Stone for illegal pet ownership and possessing a dangerous animal without a permit. Despite these legal issues, Stone remains pleased with Mango's new home, where she can continue to grow and thrive under professional care.
