The Nigerian government has disbursed over ₦2.5 billion in student loans to 12 institutions across the country.

This initiative, facilitated by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), has benefited 22,120 students, ensuring they can continue their academic pursuits without financial hindrance.

Nasir Ayitogo, the spokesman for NELFund, emphasized the strategic importance of this effort, aligning it with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing educational access for Nigerians.

"These disbursements are aimed at ensuring that students who genuinely need financial support can continue their education," Ayitogo stated.

He further explained that the funds were allocated based on each institution’s academic calendar, with six of the 12 institutions already receiving full payment, covering over 20,000 students.

The total amount disbursed so far stands at approximately ₦2,026,163,340, with the remaining six institutions set to receive their payments in the coming week.

Ayitogo highlighted that these disbursements would provide much-needed peace of mind for students and their families, allowing them to focus on their studies.

In addition to covering institutional fees, NELFund has also commenced the payment of upkeep allowances to students.

For the month of July alone, ₦442 million has been allocated to support living expenses for all 22,120 beneficiaries.

"This initiative reflects the federal government’s commitment to the overall well-being and academic success of Nigerian students in government institutions," Ayitogo noted.
