A 26-year-old graduate, photographer and keyboardist, Nicholas, found himself spending ten months in prison after sending a resignation text message to his boss.
The incident began in October 2023 when Nicholas decided to resign from his role at a popular photo studio in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). His boss, Oluwole Mike, owner of Pesther Photostudio in FCT, publisher of One Nigeria Television and a politician in the current administration, was infuriated by the content of the text message and had Nicholas arrested.
Initially detained for two days, Nicholas was subsequently charged with "intentional insult" and locked up in a cell with 189 other inmates at a prison in Keffi. Unable to afford the bail sum, which was initially set at N100,000 and later reduced to N50,000, Nicholas remained incarcerated even after his boss wrote a letter to the court withdrawing the charge.
Two weeks ago, Nicholas's plight came to the attention of @hopebehindbar, an advocacy group. The group's founder, @thehassanian, reached out to a friend who anonymously donated the N50,000 needed for Nicholas's bail.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Nicholas said, "I never imagined that a simple resignation could lead to such a nightmare. I am grateful to everyone who helped secure my release."

The first picture shows Nicholas two months before his imprisonment, the second and third captures him upon his release last week, and the third depicts him at the @hopebehindbar office today.
