Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced a transformative policy that will provide free and compulsory education to all children from primary to junior secondary levels, effective January 2025.

This initiative marks a shift in the state's educational landscape, aiming to ensure that every child residing in Abia, regardless of their state of origin, has access to quality education.

The announcement was made by Prince Okey Kanu, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, following a State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu emphasized the government's dedication to improving educational access and quality, stating, "Education is free in Abia State up to the end of Junior Secondary School.

There is no reason whatsoever why parents will not send their children to school." This policy aligns with Governor Otti's earlier declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector, reflecting a commitment to fostering educational inclusivity and strengthening academic infrastructure.

The government has also warned that under the Abia State Child’s Rights Law 2006, parents and guardians who fail to comply with the enrollment mandate will face legal action. "In line with the Abia State Child’s Rights Law, it will now be an offence for parents not to send their children and wards to school in Abia State," Kanu added.
