Akpata Vows to Contest Again After Edo Election Defeat

Esther

Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party's candidate in the recent Edo State governorship election, has reaffirmed his commitment to his political aspirations despite not securing a victory.

The former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President made his stance clear during an appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today.

Akpata criticized the election process, citing issues such as vote buying, voter apathy, and general mayhem, which he believes significantly hindered his chances of winning. "I have said it over and over again. We are here to fix Nigeria and Edo State," Akpata stated. He emphasized that achieving his goal of governing the South-South State will require more than one attempt, underscoring his resolve to contest in future elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election held on September 21, 2024, with Akpata finishing a distant third.

Despite this setback, Akpata remains undeterred. "I want to be able to tell my grandchildren what I did when Nigeria was at this difficult time. So, it’s going to take more than one election," he asserted.

In addition to his future political plans, Akpata revealed that he would consult with his legal team to decide whether to challenge the election results. "I am going to be meeting with my lawyers and the Labour Party will also be meeting with its lawyers. Then we will come to a decision whether or not we will be challenging the outcome of the election," he added.
