Akwa Ibom Gov Addresses Controversy Surrounding Daughter's Role as First Lady

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has addressed the media to clarify the role of his daughter, Mrs. Helen Obareki, following the passing of his wife, Patience Umo Eno, on September 26, 2024.

The governor dispelled rumors suggesting that he appointed his daughter as the First Lady. Instead, he explained that Helen would coordinate the Office of the First Lady, ensuring the continuation of essential social projects initiated by her late mother.

Governor Eno emphasized that "First Ladies are never appointed but are naturally positioned alongside governors." He further clarified, "Appointing her as the coordinator is not an appointment of a First Lady. You don't appoint a First Lady."

This decision was made to provide family comfort and maintain the continuity of major initiatives like the "Golden Initiative For All," which supports women, the elderly, and vulnerable groups in the state.

Helen Obareki, who had been her mother's special assistant, was chosen for this role due to her experience, education, and long-standing involvement in these projects.

Governor Eno stated, "The First Lady has gone, but the work of the First Lady must continue, so I choose our first daughter." He assured that as long as he remains governor, the programs initiated by his late wife would not cease.

During a condolence visit by Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Eno introduced Helen as the person to "coordinate the office of the First Lady." Mrs. Tinubu expressed her understanding and support, acknowledging Helen's capabilities and encouraging her to continue her mother's legacy.
