Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who recently clinched Olympic gold, is taking legal action against media outlets following reports that question her gender eligibility.

The controversy erupted during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games when Khelif swiftly defeated Angela Carini in just 46 seconds, sparking widespread debate and drawing comments from high-profile figures such as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and author J.K. Rowling.

Reports from French media allege that Khelif possesses XY chromosomes, typically associated with male genetics, which has fueled the ongoing discourse about gender identity in sports.

In response, Khelif has initiated legal proceedings to address these claims and protect her privacy.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed Khelif's longstanding participation in women's competitions, including the Tokyo Olympics and various International Boxing Association (IBA) tournaments.

The IOC expressed its dismay over the harassment Khelif is facing, stating, "The IOC will not comment while legal action is ongoing, or on media reports about unverified documents whose origin cannot be confirmed." Khelif, who received a hero’s welcome upon returning to Algeria after her Olympic success, has already filed a complaint in France for online harassment related to this issue.
