The Anambra State government has initiated a thorough investigation following the arrest of Franklin Okechukwu Nwadialo, the newly elected chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area.

Nwadialo was apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Texas for his alleged involvement in a $3.3 million romance scam. The U.S. Department of Justice indicted him for orchestrating an elaborate online fraud scheme that targeted vulnerable women in the United States.

Using fake identities on dating platforms such as Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café, Nwadialo manipulated victims into sending large sums of money by fabricating personal crises like military fines and family emergencies.

Anambra State’s Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, stated that the state government is actively gathering more information about the case.

"We first heard about the situation online, and we are currently investigating to understand the full details before making any decisions. Our priority is to ensure that justice is served and to preserve the integrity of our state," Nwabunwanne said in an official statement.

The arrest has sent shockwaves across Anambra State, where Nwadialo's recent election had been seen as a beacon of hope for progressive leadership in Ogbaru LGA.

Community members and officials have expressed their disappointment and concern over the potential impact on the area's reputation. In accordance with constitutional procedures, it is expected that Nwadialo's deputy will assume the chairman's duties pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

The Anambra government has emphasized its commitment to addressing allegations of corruption and criminal activities, irrespective of an individual's political status. As the FBI continues its investigation, the state government has assured the public of its cooperation with U.S. authorities to ensure a transparent process.
