Patients and their families have taken to the streets in protest at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The demonstration was sparked by a 17-day power outage following the disconnection of electricity by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
This disruption has severely impacted hospital operations, leading to delays in critical services such as test results and surgeries. The protesters, visibly frustrated, voiced their grievances loudly.
In a video that has since gone viral, chants of "UCH don't kill us, we want light" echoed through the hospital grounds.
The demonstrators fear that the ongoing blackout could tarnish the reputation of UCH, which is regarded as a premium healthcare institution in Nigeria.
The root of the issue lies in UCH's classification under the "Band A" electricity tariff structure, which imposes a substantial monthly payment of N80 million.
This financial burden has led to the current predicament, highlighting the broader challenges faced by healthcare facilities across the nation.
