The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) has raised serious concerns about the importation of substandard and potentially harmful petroleum products into Nigeria.
The association is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action to address this pressing issue.
According to ANPE, these tainted fuels, often referred to as "fake fuel," pose significant health risks, environmental hazards, and economic burdens on Nigerians.
Mr. Solomon Ola, the Global President of ANPE, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “We are alarmed by recent developments where our home country has become a lucrative destination for dumping adulterated petroleum products like petrol.”
The association highlighted that these inferior products frequently fail quality checks, leading to vehicle damage and endangering lives.
Moreover, they warned of potential diplomatic ramifications, as these imports might breach international sanctions imposed on Russian crude oil. Ola cautioned, "The importation of sanctioned-tainted petrol could strain Nigeria’s diplomatic relations, a risk we cannot afford."
ANPE also criticized the inefficiency of Nigeria's local refineries, which has left the nation heavily reliant on imports despite being a major oil producer.
This dependency has made Nigeria vulnerable to becoming a dumping ground for low-quality goods. The group expressed frustration over the lack of support for local refineries like Dangote's, accusing certain "oil cabals" of exacerbating the reliance on imported, low-quality fuel. “This practice actively sabotages President Tinubu’s economic policy by forcing Nigerians to purchase pricier and harmful fuel,” ANPE stated.
