The Lagos State Chairman of the All Peoples Congress (APC),Cornelius Ojelabi, emphasized the critical need for collective action to achieve food security across the nation.
The event, themed "Ensuring Food Security for Sustainable Future: Youth Participation and Home-grown Farming," aimed to raise awareness about the vital role agriculture plays in securing the country's future.
Ojelabi highlighted the historical significance of agriculture in the South West region, urging residents to return to farming practices. "Food security should be a collective responsibility particularly our youths, to encourage them to embrace farming; that is .the theme," he stated, underscoring the importance of youth involvement in agricultural activities.
The Lagos state government is actively supporting this initiative through its Ministry of Agriculture by providing resources such as feeds to poultry farmers and offering essential support to other farmers. This commitment reflects a broader strategy to enhance local agricultural development and ensure sustainable food production.
The meeting also served as a platform for empowering local artisans, with 40 individuals receiving tools and financial support to boost their livelihoods.
This multifaceted approach not only aims to alleviate poverty but also strengthens community engagement in agriculture.
Abdul Ahmed Salawu, Executive Chairman of Shomolu Local Government Area, noted the significance of the gathering, describing it as a crucial step towards reducing poverty levels.
Similarly, Hon. Abiodun Orekoya, Chairman of Shomolu Constituency 1, stressed the necessity of embracing home farming to combat food insecurity, stating, "Without agriculture, the country is going nowhere."
