Arsenal has officially confirmed the signing of Spanish international Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad.
The 28-year-old midfielder, who recently helped Spain win Euro 2024, joins the Gunners on a four-year contract with an option for an additional year.
The transfer fee is reported to be in the region of €38.5 million (£32.67 million), comprising an initial €33.5 million (£28.43 million) and €5 million (£4.24 million) in performance-related add-ons.
Merino, born in Pamplona, Spain, began his career at Osasuna before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2016, where he won the German Cup. He then had a stint at Newcastle United, making 24 Premier League appearances.
Since joining Real Sociedad in 2018, Merino has been a pivotal figure, making 242 appearances, scoring 27 goals, and providing 30 assists. His contributions were instrumental in Sociedad's Copa del Rey victory in 2020 and their qualification for the Champions League last season.
Sporting Director Edu expressed his delight at securing Merino, stating, "Mikel was a key target for us this summer, and we identified him as a player who can fit perfectly into our squad and profile to improve us."
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta added, "Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility. He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for a number of seasons now."
Merino's arrival is expected to bolster Arsenal's midfield hugely. Standing at 6ft 2in, he brings an aerial presence and physicality that will complement the technical prowess of his new teammates. His ability to support both defensive and attacking plays makes him a versatile asset for Arteta's side.
The transfer is subject to the completion of regulatory processes, but Merino is set to join his new teammates immediately at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.
