Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle to sign Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad for a fee that could rise to £32.68 million (€38.5 million).
The 28-year-old, who has less than a year remaining on his contract with the La Liga side, will join the Gunners on a four-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months.
The deal includes an initial payment of £28.4 million, with potential add-ons amounting to £4.2 million.
Merino is set to undergo a medical at Arsenal, marking his return to English football after a previous stint with Newcastle United between 2017 and 2018.
Merino's move comes after an impressive summer where he played a pivotal role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, helping his nation secure a record fourth European Championship title.
Additionally, he was instrumental in Real Sociedad's successful campaign last season, which saw them reach the Champions League knockout stages and the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal's manager, has been keen to bolster his midfield options, and Merino's versatility and experience make him a valuable addition to the squad.
Arteta commented on the signing, stating, "He can do a little bit of everything," highlighting Merino's all-around capabilities on the pitch.
This transfer marks Arsenal's third signing of the summer, as they continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League season. The Gunners are optimistic that Merino's arrival will enhance their chances of competing at the highest level both domestically and in Europe.
Merino's previous experience in the Premier League with Newcastle United was marked by a brief but impactful tenure.
He initially joined Borussia Dortmund on loan before making the move permanent based on his performances.
Despite spending just a year in the North East, Merino left a lasting impression, particularly with the passionate fanbase at St James' Park.
Reflecting on his time in England, Merino said, "[It was] Very good. What marked on me the most in Newcastle was the stadium, the fans. I think it was a unique life, feeling what St James’ Park is, I will always have it in my heart and mind because it is something unique."
