An Austrian neurosurgeon has been fired for allegedly allowing his 13-year-old daughter to drill a hole in a patient's skull during an emergency surgery.
The patient, a 33-year-old man, was unconscious after sustaining a severe head injury in a forestry accident.
The surgery, which took place in January, was initially deemed successful. However, the patient has not yet been able to return to work.
The incident came to light in April through an anonymous complaint, and the patient only learned he was involved in July via media reports. "You lie there. Unwilling, unconscious, and become guinea pigs. There's probably no other way to put it... that's not possible. You can't do that," said the victim's lawyer, Peter Freiberger, expressing his client's shock and disapproval over the unprofessional conduct. "There was no contact, no explanation or apology, nothing. That is simply undignified."
The victim is now seeking damages with legal support, citing the lack of professionalism and the emotional distress caused by the incident.
