The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile has announced that it is actively engaging with the United States government to advocate for Biafra's liberation.
This movement, deeply rooted in historical grievances and socio-political marginalization of the Igbos by the Nigerian government, claims that over 50 million Igbos have supported a referendum for self-determination.
Ekpa disclosed through his official X handle that recent efforts have included dialogues with US congressmen and senior officials, such as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, and the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul.
These discussions aim to establish a supportive policy framework for Biafra's liberation. Ekpa emphasized, "We have taken the Biafra Liberation to the global stage for the very first time since after the war."
The reception from members of Congress has reportedly been overwhelmingly positive, with no expressed support for the Nigerian government.
Ekpa noted, "There were explicit commitments and assurances given by members of Congress we have met to support the Biafra cause, albeit through different expressions."
However, a significant challenge remains in bridging the information gap in Washington, DC, and raising awareness among more US lawmakers about the Biafran struggle.
