Bianca Ojukwu's recent appointment as Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sparked considerable discussion and optimism regarding the potential release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the broader reconciliation efforts in the Southeast region.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions and the continued detention of Kanu, which has been a point of contention and concern for many stakeholders.

President Tinubu's decision to appoint Bianca Ojukwu is seen by some as a strategic move towards national healing, particularly between the Southeast and the rest of Nigeria.

Katchi Ononuju, Director General of the Heritage Centre, emphasized that the president recognizes the need for unity and is working towards it, stating, "The President understands now that what brought him to office was a political party, and he’s now working on an attempt to heal the country."

Bianca Ojukwu, who has previously held diplomatic positions, including serving as Nigeria's ambassador to Spain, is now in a position to advise President Tinubu on the implications of Kanu's detention on Nigeria's international image.

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s lead counsel, noted, "Lady Bianca has publicly called for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, reiterating it earlier this month in the United States during a keynote address to the American Military Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID)."

The appointment has also been described as a potential boost to the chances of Kanu's release and an enhancement of Tinubu's administration's reputation in the Southeast.

Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam remarked, "The appointment of Bianca Ojukwu as a Minister in the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a strategic and commendable political decision by President Tinubu’s administration."

However, there are calls for concrete actions beyond appointments. As Ononuju pointed out, "Appointing someone like Bianca also calls for follow-through actions." The hope is that Bianca's influence could facilitate a political solution for Kanu's release, although Ononuju insists that such a decision ultimately lies with the Nigerian government.
