Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, is facing potential new criminal charges.
An investigative panel, led by Magdalena Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, has uncovered allegations that Bobrisky served his jail term in a private apartment rather than a correctional facility.
Furthermore, it is claimed that he bribed officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him.
The panel's findings have prompted recommendations for defamation and criminal charges against Bobrisky. The report states, "The Nigerian Correctional Service should file defamation suits against Bobrisky under sections 373-375 of the Criminal Code Act for his false claims about bypassing the prison system, tarnishing the institution’s reputation."
Additionally, four prison officers, including former Controller of Corrections Ben Rabbi-Freeman, have been indicted for their roles in this scandal.
They are accused of facilitating Bobrisky's alleged preferential treatment and failing to maintain proper documentation.
The panel has urged the Department of State Services to investigate whether Bobrisky, directly or through intermediaries, bribed EFCC or correctional service officials. If these allegations are confirmed, Bobrisky could face charges under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act.
