Bobrisky: Reps Probe Alleged Bribery Scandal Involving EFCC and NCS

Esther

The Nigerian House of Representatives has launched an investigation into serious bribery allegations involving officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS).

This move comes in response to a motion presented by Patrick Umoh, a lawmaker representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, following explosive revelations on social media about Bobrisky's imprisonment.

Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, ignited the controversy by claiming that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against the popular cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, after receiving a ₦15 million bribe.

Otse further alleged that Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months imprisonment in April for abusing and defacing the naira, did not serve his time in official custody. Instead, he was reportedly housed in a private apartment outside the correctional facility.

In a recorded conversation shared online, a voice believed to be Bobrisky’s stated, “When I got to court, I admitted guilt, hoping for either a fine or community service. However, the court sentenced me. On my way to prison, my godfather called and assured me I wouldn’t enter prison. He told me not to worry and said he would arrange an apartment near the prison and speak to the Comptroller General of Prisons in Abuja.”

The same voice continued, “After they spoke, I was taken to an apartment where I was told not to come out until I finished my sentence. They informed the person at the apartment that their boss instructed them to keep me there and not let me leave. The person said he’d collect ₦10m.” Additionally, Bobrisky allegedly claimed he bribed EFCC officials with ₦15m to drop the money laundering charges against him. These allegations have raised significant concerns about the integrity of Nigeria's law enforcement agencies.

As a result, the House has directed its Committee on Anti-Corruption and Correctional Service to investigate these claims and submit their findings within three weeks.

The investigation aims to address issues of corruption, legal irregularities, and the influence of social media on legislative actions.
