The Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, has sounded an alarm over the condition of the aircraft used by Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
The call for action comes after a troubling incident where the Vice President's plane suffered windshield damage at JFK Airport in New York, forcing him to cancel his official trip to the Commonwealth Summit in Samoa.
Lawan emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "The life of the Vice President and that of his crew/officials stand at risk while using the old and faulty presidential aircraft."
He urged the Federal Government to act swiftly by providing a new aircraft to prevent any potential tragedies.
The incident at JFK Airport, described by the Presidency as being caused by a foreign object hitting the plane, has highlighted ongoing issues with the current aircraft.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, "some parts of the aircraft, including the cockpit’s windscreen, were damaged during the incident."
This is not the first time the Vice President's aircraft has faced problems, as reports indicate multiple issues have arisen recently. Lawan's statement also called for a thorough investigation by the United States government into the incident, signifying the need for stringent safety measures and maintenance of governmental transportation assets.
