AFC Bournemouth has secured the services of Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

This transfer, confirmed on Thursday, comes after Kepa signed a one-year contract extension with Chelsea, ensuring that his parent club retains his transfer value.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, born on October 3, 1994, in Ondarroa, Biscay, Basque Country, began his football journey at Athletic Bilbao's youth setup at Lezama in 2004.

He made his senior debut with Basconia in 2011 and later became a first-team regular at Athletic Bilbao. In 2018, he moved to Chelsea for a record fee of €80 million (£72 million), making him the world's most expensive goalkeeper at the time.

During his tenure at Chelsea, Kepa made 163 first-team appearances and won four trophies, including the prestigious 2021 Champions League title.

Despite his initial promise, Kepa faced criticism for inconsistent performances and was eventually loaned to Real Madrid for the 2023-2024 season, where he won La Liga and the Champions League.

Bournemouth's manager, Andoni Iraola, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "It will provide us the experience he has from playing with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and the pressure that comes with playing in those kinds of games. It will add competition to the team." The club's chief executive, Neill Blake, also shared his delight, saying, "We are delighted to bring a player of Kepa’s calibre to the club."

Kepa's style of play is characterized by his consistency, speed, agility, shot-stopping ability, and quick reflexes. Known for his footwork and distribution, he fits well into possession-based systems that rely on a high back-line. Despite facing challenges and criticism during his career, Kepa has shown resilience and adaptability, regaining his form under different managers.
