No fewer than 40 fishermen in Yauri, Kebbi State, Nigeria, have successfully hunted and killed a mother hippopotamus that had been responsible for the deaths of Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at the Orchard Farm owned by the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, and another local farmer. This decisive action took place on October 8, 2024, following a directive from the Emir himself.
The hippo, which had become a significant threat to the community, was eliminated using traditional methods—bows and arrows—by the determined group of fishermen. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that after the successful hunt, the animal was transported on a large canoe to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, Alhaji Kasimu Aliyu, where it was met with applause from a crowd of onlookers. The meat from the hippo was then butchered and shared among the local people, turning a moment of danger into one of communal solidarity and relief.
