Adam Robert Corden Britton, a renowned British-born Australian crocodile expert, has been sentenced to over 10 years in prison by the Northern Territory Supreme Court in Australia.

The 53-year-old zoologist, who had collaborated with esteemed figures like Sir David Attenborough on wildlife projects, was found guilty of a range of offenses including bestiality and animal cruelty.

According to a BBC report, Britton pleaded guilty to at least 56 charges related to animals and four counts of accessing child abuse material.

Britton's public persona as a dedicated researcher starkly contrasted with his private activities. He was born around 1972 in West Yorkshire, England, and graduated from Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in 1987. He earned an Honours degree in Zoology from the University of Leeds in 1992 and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Bristol in 1996.

After moving to Australia in 1996, he met his future wife, Erin, a wildlife ranger and biologist. The couple established a consultancy specializing in wild crocodiles and Britton became a research associate at Charles Darwin University in Darwin, Australia.

Despite his professional achievements, Britton's heinous crimes came to light when he was arrested in April 2022 after a search of his rural Darwin property. The court heard that Britton filmed himself torturing animals until almost all died, sharing the videos online under pseudonyms.

His crimes were so grotesque that Northern Territory Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Grant warned the courtroom they could cause "nervous shock." Justice Grant described Britton's depravity as falling "entirely outside any ordinary human conception."

Britton's wife, Erin Britton, reportedly fled Darwin and changed her name after his arrest. She is said to be "in hiding" following the revelation of her husband's vile crimes. Britton's sentencing included a ban on owning any mammals for the rest of his life, and he will become eligible for parole in September 2028.
