Nigerian and Bayer Leverkusen forward, Victor Boniface is currently under investigation by the German Football Association (DFB) for an alleged unsportsmanlike gesture made during the Super Cup victory over VfB Stuttgart on August 17, 2024.
The incident in question occurred post-match when Boniface reportedly made a middle finger gesture towards the Stuttgart players while celebrating Leverkusen's win. This action has put him at risk of a suspension that could see him miss the Bundesliga opener.
Boniface, who was instrumental in the match by scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute, was substituted before the penalty shootout, which Leverkusen won 4-3. Despite not participating in the shootout, his post-match behavior has drawn major attention.
A spokesman for the DFB stated, "Boniface is suspected of having shown the Stuttgart players the finger when he ran past them just after the final whistle."
The referee, Tobias Stieler, did not witness the incident, allowing the control committee to investigate retrospectively.
The DFB has asked Boniface to respond to the charge promptly, with a potential two-game suspension looming if found guilty.
This suspension would affect both league and cup matches, posing a major setback for Leverkusen as they aim to build on their historic unbeaten season in the Bundesliga.
