Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced plans to reduce the number of immigrants entering the country over the next three years.
This decision comes in response to rapid population growth following a post-Covid-19 surge, which initially bolstered the economy and workforce. However, concerns have emerged about the exploitation of Canada's immigration system.
Trudeau highlighted issues with "fake colleges" and "big chain corporations" that have been exploiting immigrants for profit. He criticized educational institutions for charging international students exorbitant tuition fees compared to domestic students, leading to widespread fraud and abuse. "There is fraud and abuse, and it needs to end," Trudeau stated in a video posted on his YouTube channel.
To address these challenges, the Canadian government plans to "effectively pause population growth" for the next two years. From 2027 onwards, immigration will gradually increase at a sustainable pace.
Trudeau also addressed the misuse of the asylum system by temporary residents seeking to extend their stay in Canada. He emphasized that failed asylum claims would result in deportation, showing the government's commitment to maintaining a fair and sustainable immigration process.
