Nigerians face a serious setback as Canada plans to slash the number of student and work permits issued in 2025.
This policy shift, announced by Immigration Minister Marc Miller on September 18, 2024, aims to manage high immigration levels that are straining Canada's housing, job markets, and social services.
Canada's population surged past 41 million earlier this year, prompting a reevaluation of immigration policies. As part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's broader strategy to reduce the number of temporary residents, Ottawa plans to issue 437,000 study permits next year, down from 485,000 in 2024 and over 500,000 in 2023.
Miller emphasized, "It is a privilege to come to Canada. It is not a right." The new regulations will also introduce restrictions on work permits for spouses of international students and foreign workers, along with enhanced checks on travel visas to curb fraudulent asylum claims.
