A harrowing incident unfolded on Friday at the IK-19 Surovikino penal colony in Russia's southern Volgograd region.

During a meeting of the prison's disciplinary commission, several inmates seized control of the facility and took staff members hostage.

The Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) confirmed that "convicts took employees of the (IK-19) correctional institution hostage," adding that measures were being taken to free the hostages.

The uprising resulted in multiple casualties, including the death of at least one prison employee. Graphic footage circulating on social media depicted three uniformed prison staff members lying motionless in pools of blood, with one having his throat slashed.

Another video showed a fourth staff member on his knees in a doorway, while the apparent hostage-takers waved ISIS flags. Although CNN has not verified the footage, the attackers' motives or identities remain unconfirmed.

Volgograd Governor Andrei Bocharov reported that at least four prison staff were hospitalized following the attack. He assured the public that "an operational headquarters has been set up to coordinate work on releasing the hostages" and emphasized that "there is no threat to the civilian population."

Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed about the hostage siege, and security forces eventually regained control of the prison, ending the siege after several hours. At least four attackers were killed during the operation.

The attackers, identified as citizens of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, were reportedly linked to Islamic State (ISIS). Unverified footage showed the hostage-takers shouting "Allahu Akbar" and holding knives and flags resembling those of ISIS.

One of the hostage-takers claimed their actions were retaliation for the "mistreatment" of Muslims in Russia. This incident follows a similar event in June when prisoners aligned with ISIS staged a siege at a jail in Rostov-on-Don, resulting in the deaths of six detainees.

The recent surge in Islamist terror attacks in Russia, including the March attack on Moscow's Crocus City Hall concert venue that killed 145 people, has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the country's security measures.
