Chelsea's ownership saga has taken a dramatic turn as reports have surfaced about a potential sale of the club, just over two years after it was acquired by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

The consortium, which purchased Chelsea from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in May 2022 for £4.25 billion ($5.6 billion), is now facing internal strife that could lead to significant changes at Stamford Bridge.

The relationship between Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, co-founder of Clearlake Capital, has reportedly deteriorated due to disagreements over the club's recruitment policy, on-pitch performances, and the lack of progress in building a new stadium.

This discord has led to speculation that the two parties are considering their options, including the possibility of one buying out the other.

Clearlake Capital holds a majority stake of 61.5% in Chelsea, while Boehly, along with his partners Hansjörg Wyss and Mark Walter, owns the remaining 38.5%.

Despite the tensions, Clearlake has made it clear that they have no intention of selling their shares and are instead interested in increasing their stake.

Boehly, who also owns a stake in the LA Dodgers, initially took on the role of sporting director but has since stepped back from day-to-day management, leaving Eghbali as the most influential figure at the club.

The Blues have spent over £1 billion on new players since the takeover, yet results have been underwhelming. Chelsea finished sixth in the Premier League last season, leading to the dismissal of head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

This followed a tumultuous period where Thomas Tuchel was sacked in September 2022, succeeded by Graham Potter, who lasted less than six months before being replaced by Frank Lampard until the end of the season.

Boehly has expressed his commitment to the club, urging fans to be patient amid criticism over the club's strategy and form. However, the ongoing "cultural divide" between him and Eghbali has raised concerns about the future direction of the club.

Reports suggest that Boehly believes he can generate sufficient capital to launch a takeover bid for majority control, but Eghbali's group remains steadfast in their refusal to sell.
