Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, the 22nd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has officially retired from service upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

Born on August 22, 1954, his retirement marks the end of a distinguished judicial career that spanned several decades.

Ariwoola's journey in the judiciary began when he was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of record in Oyo State in 1992, transitioning from private legal practice.

He served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal between 2005 and 2011, before being elevated to the Supreme Court bench on November 22, 2011.

His tenure as the Chief Justice of Nigeria commenced on June 27, 2022, following the resignation of his predecessor, Justice Tanko Muhammad. His appointment was formally confirmed by the Nigerian Senate on September 21, 2022.

Throughout his career, Justice Ariwoola attended numerous international and national conferences and workshops, enhancing his expertise and contributing to the global legal community. Notably, he is a fellow of the International Dispute Resolution Institute (FIDRI), having been inducted in Dubai, U.A.E., in 2014.

As events marking his retirement unfold at the Supreme Court, there are strong indications that Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun may be named as his successor, making her the new Chief Justice of Nigeria. This transition signifies a new chapter for the Nigerian judiciary, continuing the legacy of leadership and judicial excellence.

Justice Ariwoola's contributions to the judiciary have been significant, and his retirement is a momentous occasion reflecting on his years of dedicated service. His Lordship is happily married with children and enjoys reading, listening to good music, photography, and shopping.
