Chinese alternative healer, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following the tragic death of Danielle Carr-Gomm during his slap therapy workshop.

The incident, which occurred in October 2016, has sparked widespread debate over the safety and ethics of unregulated alternative therapies.

Danielle Carr-Gomm, a 61-year-old grandmother from Lewes, East Sussex, was participating in Xiao's Paida Lajin therapy event when she succumbed to diabetic ketoacidosis.

This controversial therapy involves participants being slapped or slapping themselves, purportedly to expel "poisonous waste" from the body.

Despite lacking any formal medical qualifications, Xiao had advised attendees to cease their prescribed medications, a decision that proved fatal for Carr-Gomm, who had been managing Type 1 diabetes since 1999.

The court heard that Carr-Gomm, motivated by her vegetarianism and fear of needles, sought alternatives to insulin. She had previously attended a similar workshop in Bulgaria, where she also stopped her insulin medication but managed to recover. However, during the Wiltshire event, her condition deteriorated rapidly.

Witnesses described her as "howling in pain" and "frothing at the mouth" before she passed away on the fourth day of the workshop. Prosecutor Mr. Atkinson highlighted Xiao's negligence, stating, "He made a token effort to get her to take her insulin, which was too little, too late."

Despite the severity of the situation, Xiao continued to promote his therapy, showing "no real sign of clear remorse," according to Mr. Justice Bright, who presided over the case.

Carr-Gomm's son, Matthew, expressed the family's devastation, saying, "She was always keen to try and find alternative methods of treating and dealing with her diabetes... Her death came as a huge shock to us."

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker of the Major Crime Investigation Team at Wiltshire Police remarked on the complexity of the investigation, noting, "Xiao's not-guilty plea has only shown the little remorse he has over Danielle's death."
