The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) recently confirmed that Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, is an active CIA asset.
This revelation was part of a memorandum filed by the CIA, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), in a federal court case concerning the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

The case involves journalist David Hundeyin, who is seeking to have redactions removed from files related to President Tinubu’s drug trafficking investigation records.
The CIA's filing emphasized the importance of protecting human sources, stating: "Human sources can be expected to furnish information to the CIA only when they are confident the CIA can and will do everything in its power to prevent the public disclosure of their cooperation."
The agency warned that confirming or denying the existence of records on a foreign national like Tinubu could jeopardize U.S. national security by revealing whether the CIA maintained any human intelligence sources related to him.
Furthermore, the DEA opposed full, unredacted disclosure of its investigation records, arguing that while Nigerians have a right to be informed about their government, they do not have a right to know what their president is up to. This stance has sparked criticism, with some suggesting it highlights the role of the U.S. government in perpetuating instability in Africa by supporting controversial leaders.
