The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling that prohibits the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, commonly known as VIO, from stopping, impounding, or confiscating vehicles, as well as imposing fines on motorists.
This decision was handed down by Justice Evelyn Maha, following a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by human rights attorney Abubakar Marshal.
The court found that the respondents, including the Director of Road Transport, the Area Commander of Jabi, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, were not legally empowered to carry out such actions.
Justice Maha declared these measures "wrongful, oppressive, and unlawful," and issued a perpetual injunction to prevent further violations of citizens' rights.
The ruling shows the protection of Nigerians' rights to freedom of movement, presumption of innocence, and property ownership without lawful justification.
