Nigeria's D'Tigress have advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's basketball tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This milestone marks the first time an African team has progressed beyond the group stage in Olympic basketball history.

On Sunday, August 4th, 2024, D'Tigress secured their place in the quarterfinals with a remarkable 79-70 victory over Canada, a team ranked fifth in the world.

The game, held in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France, saw standout performances from Ezinna Kalu, who scored 21 points, and Elizabeth Balogun, who contributed 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.

The Nigerian team capitalized on Canada's mistakes, scoring 27 points off turnovers and demonstrating a robust defense that stifled their opponents.

D'Tigress began their Olympic campaign with a stunning 75-62 upset over No. 3 ranked Australia, marking the first time an African team defeated the Opals in a major tournament.

Despite a subsequent 75-64 loss to host nation France, the Nigerian women knew they needed a win against Canada to advance, which they achieved in grand style.

This victory not only propels D'Tigress into the quarterfinals but also cements their place in history as trailblazers for African basketball on the global stage.
