Actor Denzel Washington opened up about his past struggles with alcohol, admitting that he has "done a lot of damage" to his body.

The 69-year-old Oscar winner, who has been sober for nearly a decade, shared insights into his journey with substance use and the impact it had on his life.

Washington revealed that his issues began with wine, describing it as "very tricky" and noting its slow, insidious nature. He recounted how his indulgence in expensive wines became a significant part of his lifestyle, often spending thousands of dollars on high-end bottles.

"I learned to drink the best," he said, reflecting on his habit of ordering premium wines from Gil Turner’s Fine Wines & Spirits on Sunset Boulevard.

Despite his frequent drinking, Washington maintained a strict boundary between his personal habits and professional responsibilities. "I never drank while I was working or preparing," he explained, emphasizing his ability to compartmentalize his life.

However, during breaks from filming, he would indulge heavily, a pattern that persisted until he decided to quit drinking in December 2014, shortly after his 60th birthday.

As he approaches his 70th birthday on December 28th, Washington views this milestone as "the last chapter" of his life.

In light of this, he has announced plans to retire following the completion of his upcoming film projects.
