The Nigerian Defense Headquarters (DHQ) has launched a military operation targeting a newly identified terrorist group known as Lukarawas.

This group, reportedly linked to ISIS in the Sahel, has been active in Nigeria's northwestern states of Sokoto and Kebbi, where it has been causing unrest by imposing levies on local communities.

According to Major General Edward Buba, the spokesperson for the Defense Headquarters, the Lukarawas group has taken advantage of challenging terrain and gaps in cross-border security cooperation to establish itself along the border regions. "Now that we know where they are, we are already going after them, and we will take them out," Maj-Gen Buba affirmed, underscoring the military's commitment to dismantling this threat.

The operation against Lukarawas is part of Nigeria's broader counter-terrorism strategy, which has evolved significantly since the insurgency led by Boko Haram.

The military has intensified its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations to track and disrupt the movements of Lukarawas fighters, preventing potential regrouping efforts.

This initiative also includes the release of a wanted list featuring nine terrorists in the Northeast, including notorious figures such as Abu Khadijah and Abur Rahman.

These efforts highlight the ongoing challenges in regional security and emphasize the need for improved cooperation across borders to effectively address the threat posed by groups like Lukarawas.
