The Department of State Services (DSS) in Ogun State arrested Ladi Adebutu, the former governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This arrest is tied to allegations surrounding the local government elections held the previous Saturday. According to reports, Adebutu allegedly brought 40 unauthorized police officers from MOPOL 49 in Lagos and was seen with PDP thugs on motorcycles in the Ikenne local government area.
These groups were reportedly attempting to snatch ballot boxes while brandishing weapons, raising significant concerns about election security and integrity.
Kayode Adebayo, the PDP's publicity secretary, confirmed Adebutu's detention, stating, "The leader of the Peoples Democratic Party has truly been detained by the DSS for charges yet unknown."
Despite several attempts to secure his release, including efforts on personal recognition or by a surety, Adebayo noted that as of 10 pm on November 18, these efforts had not succeeded. He assured that Adebutu's legal team would address the matter promptly.
In response to the situation, Adebayo urged calm among the public and party supporters, emphasizing, "Our principal has called for calm and directed that all members of the party, supporters, and well-wishers should be rest assured that this time shall pass; it is one of the prices for our democracy."
