DSS Denies Involvement in Late Night Raid at NLC Headquarters

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Abuja was raided on the night of Wednesday, August 7, 2024 by heavily armed security operatives.

The NLC spokesperson reported that some of these operatives were in plain clothes, leading to suspicions that they might be from the State Security Service (SSS).

However, the Department of State Services (DSS) has categorically denied any involvement in this operation.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 8, 2024, the DSS asserted, "We did not carry out any operation at the NLC office in Abuja." This denial came amidst widespread condemnation of the raid, which many viewed as an attack on democratic norms and workers' rights.

Amnesty International Nigeria's Director, Isa Sanusi, described the incident as a "brazen invasion" and part of a "sinister and calculated attack designed to intimidate the labour union."

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana also weighed in, calling for the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to identify the perpetrators.

Falana emphasized that the invasion was reminiscent of past military-era tactics used to suppress dissent, stating, "The invasion is a shameful reminder of the armed invasion of the NLC secretariat on February 28, 1988."

Despite the DSS's denial, the NLC remains adamant that the raid was carried out by state security forces. Benson Upah, the NLC spokesperson, noted that the operatives ransacked books and materials, claiming they were used to incite recent protests against bad governance.
