Economic Hardship: Tafawa Balewa Tells Tinubu to Reduce Ministers and Tackle Insecurity

A former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Abdul-Jhalil Tafawa Balewa has called on President Bola Tinubu to reduce the number of ministers in his cabinet and address the pressing issue of insecurity in Nigeria.

This advice comes as the nation grapples with economic challenges. Speaking to journalists in Lagos on September 9, 2024, Tafawa-Balewa emphasized the need for President Tinubu to streamline the current 48 ministries to cut down on governance costs. "I think we have too many ministries, about 48, that need to be slimmed down because a lot of money is being used to run these ministries," he stated.

He further suggested that the President should strengthen his cabinet by incorporating more technocrats who are well-versed in modern technologies and management practices. Tafawa-Balewa also highlighted the critical issue of insecurity, which he believes is hampering food production and overall economic stability. "We have to improve our security so that our farmers can go to the farms. We are going to have a burst of food production. Without security, we cannot improve our food production right now," he added.

The former PDP candidate's comments come at a time when President Tinubu is facing mounting criticism over his economic policies. Various groups and individuals have voiced their concerns, urging the President to take immediate action to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians.
