The newly inaugurated Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has announced a probe into the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

This decision was revealed during Okpebholo's inaugural speech at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on November 12, 2024.

Governor Okpebholo is setting up a panel of inquiry to investigate the controversial incident from June 17, 2019, when 14 elected lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) were denied inauguration into the 7th Assembly.

Describing the event as "a big blow to our democracy," Okpebholo emphasized the necessity of this investigation to prevent future occurrences and to uphold the integrity of the legislative arm, which he regards as "an essential component for the sustenance of democracy."

The governor expressed his commitment to working collaboratively with the State House of Assembly, stating, "My administration is ready to work with the state’s legislators to strengthen institutions of governance and accelerate development." He also highlighted the importance of the separation of powers, pledging to enhance the judicial system's capacity to deliver justice fairly and promptly.

In a related effort to address past administrative oversights, Okpebholo has directed the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to expedite the swearing-in of three judges previously recommended by the National Judicial Council but not sworn in by the Obaseki administration.

"The delay and refusal by the previous administration to swear in three judges is indeed regrettable," Okpebholo remarked, underscoring his administration's resolve to rectify these issues swiftly.
