Edo State Gov Okpebholo Suspends Market Unions over High Price of Food

Esther

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has suspended all market unions and associations with immediate effect.

This action comes in response to reports that these unions have been engaging in practices detrimental to consumers, particularly low-income earners.

Governor Okpebholo's decision was announced in a statement by Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary, highlighting the government's concern over the unions' activities.

"The attention of the State Government has been drawn to the disturbing activities of market unions in the state," the statement read. It was noted that union leaders have been preventing farmers from selling their produce directly to consumers and have been arbitrarily setting prices, leading to an "astronomical rise" in food costs.

The governor's suspension of the unions is part of a broader strategy to ensure economic stability and fair trade practices within the state.

Security agencies have been instructed to arrest any union leaders who defy this directive, underscoring the seriousness of the government's stance.

This initiative aligns with calls from the Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP), which had urged the governor to implement policies to curb the unions' influence on food prices.

Samson Isibor, CRPP's state chairman, emphasized the need for such measures, stating, "The cost of living is also high in Edo State due to the activities of market unions, which dictate to traders the prices of foodstuffs."
