Edo State Tensions Rise as Obaseki and Shaibu Clash Over Alleged Looting

Esther

Dispute has emerged between the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki and reinstated Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu concerning the alleged looting of government properties.

As the end of Obaseki's tenure approaches, with Senator Monday Okpebholo set to take over as governor, this conflict highlights the underlying tensions within the state government.

The controversy began when Shaibu issued a circular on October 4, 2024, directed at permanent secretaries, departments, and agencies, urging them to prevent the looting of government properties by political appointees. He warned that they would be held accountable for any missing assets by the incoming administration.

Shaibu emphasized, “As our administration ends in a few weeks, I have issued a stern warning to Permanent Secretaries, Heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to guard against the looting of government properties by political appointees, as they would be held accountable by the incoming administration for any assets missing under their watch.”

However, this directive was met with resistance from Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to Governor Obaseki on Media Projects. Osagie dismissed Shaibu's authority to issue such directives, citing his impeachment status.

He stated, “We want to restate that Philip Shaibu remains impeached as the deputy governor of Edo State until the determination of the court and therefore lacks the power and authority to issue directives or warnings to Permanent Secretaries, Heads of MDAs, or any staff under the employ of the Edo State Government.”
