Governor Godwin Obaseki has called for calm among citizens following the declaration of Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, while Obaseki's party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,274 votes.
Addressing the public on September 23, 2024, Obaseki expressed his concerns over what he termed as "impunity and reckless disregard for processes and law" during the election.
He urged the people of Edo State to refrain from violence and property destruction despite their frustrations. "Peace and justice will always win in the end," he assured, emphasizing the importance of maintaining order.
Obaseki hinted at the PDP's plans to seek a resolution through democratic means, stating, "In a democracy, there are safeguards for addressing grievances, and we hope that those affected will seek resolution for this blatant disregard of law and process."
The governor acknowledged the disheartenment felt by many Edo citizens, describing the election outcome as a "tragedy" and a "travesty of democracy." Nonetheless, he encouraged everyone to continue with their daily activities, promising that the government remains committed to their wellbeing and security.
