The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Ibrahim Mohammad, a Nigerien national, along with his family and other guests, over allegations of naira abuse during his wedding to Amina Babagana Zannah in Kano.
This action follows a viral video that captured the extravagant spraying of naira notes at the event, sparking public outrage and drawing attention to the EFCC's ongoing campaign against currency abuse.
The EFCC clarified that the incident occurred at the wedding dinner of Zannah, who is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, the CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise.
The commission emphasized that initial reports mistakenly linked the naira-spraying to the wedding of Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje.
However, investigations confirmed that the celebration involved the groom's family from Niger Republic, who sprayed both naira and dollar bills.
Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, stated, “The Commission has invited the Nigerien groom, Mohammad, to report at its national headquarters in Abuja, with everyone that sprayed naira notes at his wedding with Zannah.”
He further reiterated the EFCC's commitment to upholding currency regulations, warning that the agency "will not move against anyone wrongly accused of an alleged crime," but will "spare no offender, no matter how highly placed."
