Poultry farmers in Nigeria have issued a stark warning about an impending surge in egg prices, projecting a dramatic increase from the current N5,500 to as much as N10,000 per crate.

This alarming forecast is primarily driven by escalating transportation costs following the removal of fuel subsidies and significant hikes in poultry feed prices.

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has urgently called for government intervention, suggesting that a state of emergency be declared in the egg production sector to avert this looming crisis.

The potential price hike poses a serious threat to protein consumption among Nigerians, which is already on the decline.

Compounding the issue are concerns over the quality and quantity of poultry feed, with reports indicating that 25kg bags are not meeting their specified weight, further burdening farmers who are grappling with rising operational costs.
