The recent hike in fuel prices has massively impacted the daily lives of Nigerians, particularly in Ekiti State. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) increased petrol prices from N617 to N897 per liter, leading to a substantial rise in transportation costs and commodity prices.

This surge has severely affected the purchasing power of consumers, especially low-income individuals who are already struggling to make ends meet.

In response to this economic strain, Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, has implemented a work-from-home policy for civil servants to alleviate some of the burdens caused by the fuel price hike.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to the Governor, Mr. Yinka Oyebode, "officers on levels 01-07 will work from home three days a week, officers on levels 08-12 are to work from home two days a week, while officers on levels 13-17 will work from home once a week."

This new arrangement is set to commence on Monday, September 9, 2024, and will be in place for two months, subject to periodic review based on prevailing circumstances.

Governor Oyebanji's directive excludes essential workers such as teachers, core health workers in hospitals, and security personnel. Each Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA) is expected to create a workable schedule to ensure that the new work-from-home arrangement does not compromise effective service delivery.

Additionally, the state government has introduced other palliative measures, including a monthly wage award for workers and pensioners and a free bus service for workers and students.

The Governor has urged residents to exercise patience with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during this challenging period. The Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji administration remains committed to enhancing workers' welfare and productivity through necessary measures.
