In a compelling address at the Annual Conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) held in Abuja, Tony Elumelu, Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA), called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritize national security as a critical measure to address the ongoing food scarcity and attract investment into the country.
Elumelu emphasized that insecurity has escalated into a national crisis, necessitating immediate and decisive action. "To protect our people, feed them, attract investment, and foster trade, we must prioritize security," he stated. He further highlighted the fundamental right of every citizen to live peacefully, go to their farms unhindered, and conduct their lives and businesses without fear.
The UBA Chairman also shows the pivotal role of the banking sector in Nigeria's economy. He noted that the sector employs millions, provides essential financial support to numerous businesses, and generates income for countless shareholders.
"The transformation of the banking sector over the last few decades is one of Nigeria’s success stories," Elumelu added.
Representing President Tinubu at the conference, Vice President Kashim Shettima reiterated the administration's commitment to economic growth through digital literacy, capacity building, and youth empowerment. "We are committed to achieving a 70 per cent digital literacy level by 2027 through collaboration and innovation," Shettima announced.
The federal government plans to train three million Nigerian youths in digital technology and essential skills, with the aim of deploying them to innovation firms across the country.
