As organisers consider their next course of action, the continuous protests in Osun State against corruption, bad government and growing living expenses show no signs of slowing down.
Despite President Bola Tinubu's recent appeal for the suspension of demonstrations and a call for dialogue, protest leaders remain resolute in their demands.
Ajala Adetunji, the Osun Coordinator of the Coalition of Concern Nigeria Citizens, emphasized that the presidential address failed to address the core concerns of the protesters.
"The protest is not a one-man show, especially concerning Osun’s case," Adetunji stated. "As far as the presidential address this morning is concerned, Mr. President did not address any of our concerns. The president was not specific about what the government will do to address the demands of the youth."
Waheed Lawal, Chairman of the Osun People’s Coalition Society, echoed similar sentiments, noting that the leadership of various groups involved in the protest would need to meet to decide on the next steps.
"The protest is a nationwide issue and Nigerians must decide on the next course of action. However, I believe that the president did not address the demands of the protesters and the masses will decide what will be done next," Lawal said.
The protests, which have seen thousands take to the streets across Nigeria, are driven by widespread frustration over economic hardship and perceived governmental failures. In Osun, demonstrators gathered at Freedom Park in Osogbo on Sunday, continuing their march into the streets as part of the nationwide movement.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has called on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to ensure that the protests remain peaceful. Represented by Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, Adeleke urged protesters to avoid any actions that could undermine the state's peace and security.
"My administration’s commitments, at all times, at making Osun a reference point for other states in Nigeria remains germane," he said. "I, therefore, implore you to be law-abiding before, during and after the coming nationwide protests, as no act of violence of any kind would be entertained by my administration in Osun State."
