Enugu Govt Urges Federal Workers to Defy Sit-at-Home Order and Continue Working on Mondays

The Enugu State Government has issued a fervent appeal to federal workers in the state, urging them to disregard the sit-at-home order and report to their duty posts on Mondays.

This plea was made by Ken Chukwuegbo, the Principal Secretary to Governor Peter Mbah, during a visit to the Federal Secretariat in Enugu, accompanied by the state Head of Service, Kenneth Ugwu.

Chukwuegbo emphasized that "Enugu is not under siege and it is not fair because their actions are giving the state a bad image."

He highlighted the huge losses incurred by the state due to the absenteeism of federal workers on Mondays, stressing that the sit-at-home order, initially imposed by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), had been declared illegal by Governor Mbah upon his assumption of office in 2023.

The government’s stance is clear: there is no longer a sit-at-home mandate in Enugu, and federal workers should emulate their state counterparts who consistently attend work on Mondays.

Chukwuegbo assured the workers of their safety, stating, "If the state workers can go to work on Mondays, I don’t see the reason federal workers cannot do the same."

Despite these assurances, some federal workers remain apprehensive about their security, particularly those commuting from suburban areas.

Emeka Nwokoro, Chairman of the Association of Heads of Federal Establishments in the state, acknowledged these concerns but reiterated the association's commitment to encouraging attendance. "We will continue sensitising them on the need to come to work on Mondays," he said.

One anonymous worker voiced a common sentiment, suggesting that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, could alleviate the region's insecurity. "The federal government should release Nnamdi Kanu from prison to end the insecurity in the region," the worker stated.
