The Labour Party (LP) recently took decisive action by suspending Senator Kevin Chukwu, who represents the Enugu East Senatorial Zone.
This suspension was initiated by the Amuri ward executives in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. The decision was based on allegations of "anti-party activities and insubordination" to the party's leadership.
The suspension was formally communicated through a letter signed by Comrade Chika Okoh, representing the Executive Council of the Labour Party, Amurri Ward.
The letter, addressed to the Chairman of the Labour Party in Enugu State via the Local Government Chairman, stated: “We, the members of the Executive Council of the Labour Party, Amurri Ward, Nkanu West LGA, hereby formally notify you, Distinguished Senator Kelvin Chukwu, of your suspension from the Labour Party for a period of 90 days, effective from the date of this notification, and/or the date of your receipt of this notice.”
The letter further elaborated that the resolution was passed due to Senator Chukwu's "acts of insubordination to the leadership of the party, your involvement in anti-party activities, and your failure to adhere to the party’s principles."
It also noted that despite several requests, Senator Chukwu had not availed himself of the opportunity to be heard regarding these allegations. The letter assured him that the constitutional provisions of the party were available should he wish to contest the suspension.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from Senator Chukwu were unsuccessful, and the state chairman of the party, Barrister Casmir Agbo, had not yet officially responded to the suspension at the time of reporting.
