Arsenal's set-piece tactics have come under intense scrutiny, with former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel labeling them as "illegal." The North London club has been in exceptional form, consistently converting set-piece opportunities into goals, a testament to their highly regarded set-piece coach, Nicolas Jover.

During their latest encounter with Manchester United, Arsenal scored two goals from corners, further solidifying their reputation for exploiting such situations.
Mikel's criticism centers around the tactics employed by Arsenal players during set-pieces, particularly their approach to obstructing opposing goalkeepers. He argues that these strategies are not aimed at playing the ball but rather at blocking the goalkeeper's path, effectively preventing them from making aerial challenges.
"The set piece, I’ve commented before. It's illegal. Those goals cannot be allowed to stand," Mikel stated emphatically, urging officials to intervene and disallow such goals.
Arsenal's proficiency in set-pieces is undeniable. Since the start of last season, they have scored more goals from corners than any other team in the Premier League, with a total of 22 goals.
This success can be attributed to the meticulous planning and execution overseen by Nicolas Jover, who joined Arsenal in 2021 from Manchester City. Under his guidance, Arsenal has developed a formidable formula for attacking corners, primarily utilizing inswingers delivered by Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.
The Gunners' strategy involves starting with a crowd of players at the back post, who then rush to central areas as the corner is taken. This tactic creates confusion among defenders and provides Arsenal's attackers with an opportunity to capitalize on the chaos.
Gabriel Magalhães, in particular, has thrived under this system, scoring five goals from corners since the start of last season, the most by any player in the division.
However, Mikel's concerns highlight a growing debate within the football community about the legality of such tactics. Clips circulating on social media have shown Arsenal players surrounding goalkeepers, effectively pinning them down and obstructing their movements. Mikel insists that this behavior should not go unchecked, warning that if referees do not address the issue, other teams may adopt similar tactics.
