Former Manchester United midfielder, Anderson, is facing imprisonment in Porto Alegre, Brazil, for failing to pay £45,000 in child maintenance.
The 36-year-old Brazilian footballer, who won the Premier League four times with United and is a father of nine, has been ordered to serve 30 days in Irmao Miguel Dario Prison unless he clears his debt.
The decision was made by a family court judge in Anderson's home city. According to respected Brazilian news website GZH, Anderson has the option to serve his sentence in a 'semi-open' regime.
This arrangement would allow him to work or study outside the jail during the day but require him to return to sleep at night.
This case shows the legal accountability and financial obligations that professional athletes face. Anderson, whose full name is Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira, retired from professional football at the age of 31.
Despite his early retirement, he remains an important figure in the football world, particularly for his contributions to Manchester United.
